About

Hi, my name is Matt.  Chances are that if you're on here, you already know who I am and what this blog is about.  If not, read on...

1.2 million steps is a journal of my upcoming section hike of  the Appalachian Trail. If you're curious about the name of the blog, it comes from the approximation that the typical thru-hiker of the Appalachian Trail will take about five million steps over the course of their trip from GA to Maine.  Since I'm only doing a section hike of the trail (six weeks), I only intend on doing about a quarter of that distance - and therefore only about a quarter of the number of the steps.  I would have just rounded down to one million steps, but that blog name was already taken.

People have a lot of misconceptions about long distance hiking on the Appalachian Trial.  Some wonder how you can carry six months worth of food in your backpack.  Others assume that you'll be bringing a gun along for either protection or for hunting/food purposes.  I wondered about these things myself before reading up on how thru-hikes actually work.  One of my goals with this blog is to clear up some of these misconceptions.

My hike is scheduled to start on Apr 2nd, 2010.  Once on the trail, I really can't say how often I'll update the journal.  It could be a week or two between posts - it's hard to say right now.

Thanks for reading!
